Gilded in the fire of pattered moonshine, The 151 brings both the high intensity sounds of Rage Against the Machine mellowed with Weezer with the influence of legends like ACDC and stage presence of James Brown. You’ll love their rock and you won’t be able to take your eyes off the band at their live shows.
Because of their extensive arts background, they’re able to demonstrate a full dynamic range in their exhibition; you’ll be raising your glasses and they’ll raise the hairs on your neck. Even their more mellow tunes impart intensity, rawness, and purpose.
Matt, the vocalist brings lime-lit blues and RnB melodies to his gritty and genuine lyrics. His abilities on keyboard open the band’s range and allow for funkier and sometimes softer tunes. This sound is complemented by Sean’s jazz training on the bass guitar which, amplified by his theater background, always provides top tier stage and studio energy. Tyler, the group’s drummer, diversifies his punk-rock influence with an eclectic range of patterns and an unmatched eye-catching flare which leaves Mike, the group’s lead guitarist who is always ready with head-banging rock riffs and soulful blues melodies.
After being featured at Clayton's Art and Wine Festival in April of 2022, it's clear their range pushes beyond the dive bar. Featured in Concord's Pioneer News for their debut full-length album "Born In Trouble", they are undoubtedly one of the bands you'll want to keep an eye on.
Their next show will be held at the legendary El Rio in San Francisco Thursday June 16th. You can't miss these up-and-comers at such an iconic SF Mission District bar; their "call in sick to work" show. $12 at the door.
To answer your questions; yes, he can drum. He draws his influences from a wide variety of genres; you’ll know once you spend a car ride with his Spotify. He’s also a master audio professional. He’s got over 10 years of recording experience and facilitated recording all of “Born In Trouble” in his bedroom and in Matt’s garage. His name’s Tyler Salinas, aka “THE CLAW”. Tyler’s had his start playing in the church. He murdered there and also murders in his pop-punk band. Now he murders in The 151. It’s ironic how he started in church and now murders so much. Anyhow, Tyler joined the band at its formation back in November of 2019 when he dropped into a keyboard set in Oakland with Matt. Now they can’t stop making noise. Tyler typically finds himself in the ‘life of the party’ role. He lives by one rule and one rule only; “ya clink, ya drink (thems the rules)”. You can stalk his IG here: @saltycookie
Sean McCandles, the bass player and wisdom-bringer of the band. Sean brings intense and unique perspective to song structure, band debate, and bass tone. Sean has a vast knowledge and history of performing arts and obtained his degree in Theater from the University of California Santa Cruz. He’s a glitch artist and actually he’s the dude who made all the glitch art (as shown on these headshots beside these descriptions) on the website and social pages. You can check out all his works on his IG @mrcrystacular Sean joined the band literally the day Matt and Tyler played together. Sean and Matt knew each other from the record shop and it turned out Sean was displaying his art at the same event Matt and Tyler were playing at. Matt explained to Sean he only now needed a bass player to complete the band. Sean took a deep breath and let out a sigh. He told Matt “I never tell anyone this but I play bass”. He then joined the band and its been rock brothers in arms ever since. He also goes by Seanathan now.
Mike Walch (or so we think) is the mysterious lead guitar player who’s been laying down sick ass licks since 1996. Mike is a carpenter in his spare time and builds his own guitars @trenchtown_guitars. He also has built some The 151 coasters which you can check out in the merch section. Mike and Matt met back in late 2017 or early 2018. Mike played bass and Matt played drums for this band that didn’t work out cause’ the singer was being a dack… but you know whatever. So after the fallout Matt called Mike up before meeting Tyler for the keyboard show and basically said “Hey Mike, you still wanna rock man"?” Mike said “Yeah, man” then Matt said “whatchu think about lead guitar"?” to which Mike replied “I’m down” to which Matt then replied: “Word”.
The lead singer… Matt Xavier… oye vey; To sum it up he once was quoted as saying: “I’ll keep makin’ whiskey in my bathtub until the motha fuckin’ feds get me in handcuffs”. Yes, he talks a lot of shit but he backs it up (he backs that ass up to). He can be seen bringing the champagne and breakfast sandwiches to practice because there’s no such thing as “too hungover” to rock in his book. Matt’s been playing music for nearly his whole life starting with Trumpet, followed by percussion, then guitar, and finally piano. He says he won’t stop rocking until he’s “layin on a coolin’ board”. His goal is to make enough money as an artist that he can quit his day job, get the fuck out of an office, and still go shopping for outrageous jackets and coats.
